Overview
From snow covered mountaintops to the middle of the ocean, when filmmaker Matt Land of Land Ltd. heads out on a shoot, he packs light and only takes the gear that he knows he can rely on regardless of what nature throws his way.
Matt is the founder of Land Ltd. A media and marketing collective that specializes in outdoor adventure filmmaking and photography with the goal to inspire change and action through showcasing powerful stories from around the world. Often shooting on rugged terrain during tough weather, Land Ltd. relies on their camera gear to keep the pace with the stories they tell.
We spoke with Matt about his shoots with Land Ltd, how he chooses his camera gear and why he relies on Wooden Camera when he’s on-location.
Tell us a little about the kinds of shoots you are normally on.
How does that affect how you build a rig/load out?
Our shoots are typically rugged and very hard on gear. Whether we have to pack out and ride mules to the top of a snowy mountain in Utah, or hang onto the grab rail on an offshore fishing boat – when it comes to gear and our rig builds we have no choice but to be streamlined and efficient or gear will get broken and we will miss the shot.
Can you tell us a little about the last project you worked on or your current one? How does Wooden Camera gear help you achieve your goals on these shoots?
We have many projects going on at once, but the best example that comes to mind for Wooden Camera is our film Lionheart which is about mountain lion hunting, conservation, and the relationship between houndsmen and hound. As you may expect, mountain lions live in hard to reach places, and Wooden Camera has taken our gear there successfully from deserts in Nevada, to some of the steepest mountains and high elevation in Utah, Colorado, and Montana. We’re filming on cinema cameras which are already heavy and Wooden Camera has proven it possible to rig our gear how we need for rugged run & gun documentary filmmaking but being both lightweight and strong. The top plates add an extra layer of protection while offering mounting points in the right places to build our rigs as streamlined as possible.
How long have you been using Wooden Camera gear? What do you like about it?
We’ve been running Wooden Camera gear a little over three years now I believe, and the construction and placement of the plates and everything is logical and makes sense for our style of filmmaking which benefits additionally from being lightweight and very strong. “We’ve never had a concern or question of if the gear will hold up and that confidence has been greatly reassuring.”
Have you used other similar products? What was that experience like?
I have, and shortly learned that you get what you pay for haha. I won’t name any names but I cut the corner on price before and found myself having to keep extra tools and screws handy because they needed to be re-tightened or replaced every other shoot because they would fall out and get lost.
In conclusion
Land Ltd. tells stories that take them around the world, through all sorts of terrain, weather and situations. They reach for gear that can keep up with their subject matter and that they can rely on to get the job done. That’s why when it’s time to pack up for the next shoot they grab Wooden Camera gear. Lightweight, rugged, and reliable, Wooden Camera accessories are ready for your next adventure.
